What is ADHD?
ADHD is a common condition that affects attention, activity level and self-control. It is not caused by poor parenting or lack of effort. The CDC has more information for families on its ADHD page.
Signs of ADHD in children
Inattention
- Makes careless mistakes or misses details in schoolwork
- Has trouble staying focused on tasks or play
- Seems not to listen when spoken to directly
- Struggles to finish homework or follow multi-step directions
- Often loses things or forgets daily activities
- Is easily distracted
Hyperactivity and impulsiveness
- Fidgets, squirms or leaves their seat when expected to stay seated
- Runs or climbs at the wrong times, or feels restless
- Talks a lot, blurts out answers or interrupts
- Has trouble waiting a turn
Many children show some of these signs at times. ADHD is considered when the signs last at least 6 months, appear at home and at school, and get in the way of daily life.
How an ADHD evaluation works
- Intake forms. Parents (and teachers, when possible) complete behavior rating forms.
- History. The pediatrician asks about symptoms, development, sleep, school, mood and family history.
- Exam. A physical exam and a review of your child’s health help rule out other causes, such as sleep, hearing or vision problems.
- Plan. If your child has ADHD, we talk through treatment options and next steps with you.
ADHD treatment by age
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends treatment based on age. Your pediatrician will tailor the plan to your child.
| Age | Usual approach |
|---|---|
| Ages 4 to 5 | Parent training in behavior management is the first step. Medicine may be considered if behavior therapy is not enough. |
| Ages 6 to 11 | Medicine together with parent training and school-based behavior support. |
| Ages 12 to 18 | Medicine with the teen’s agreement, plus behavior therapy and school support. |

ADHD FAQs
At what age can a child be evaluated for ADHD?
The American Academy of Pediatrics guideline covers evaluation and treatment of ADHD in children ages 4 through 18. If you have concerns about a younger child, talk to a pediatrician about development and behavior. Call us at 630-755-5437 to discuss your child’s age and symptoms.
How is ADHD diagnosed in children?
A pediatrician reviews your child’s history, symptoms and behavior at home and school. Symptoms must be present for at least 6 months, appear in more than one setting and affect daily life. Forms from parents and teachers are part of the evaluation, and the doctor also checks for other causes.
What should I bring to an ADHD evaluation?
Bring recent report cards, teacher comments, any school plans such as an IEP or 504 plan, your child’s medical history and a list of medicines. Write down examples of behavior at home, such as trouble finishing homework or following directions. Specific examples help the doctor more than general descriptions.
Does every child with ADHD need medicine?
No. Treatment depends on age and how much ADHD affects your child. For children ages 4 to 5, behavior training for parents is the first step. Older children often use medicine together with behavior therapy and school support. Your pediatrician explains the options and decides the plan with you.
Can other problems look like ADHD?
Yes. Anxiety, sleep problems, learning differences, hearing or vision problems and stress can cause trouble with focus or behavior. This is why an evaluation looks at the whole child and not only a checklist. Some children have ADHD along with another condition.
